The Old Edwards Inn and Spa — the Perfect Place for a Girlfriends’ Getaway!

When my friend Linda and I checked in to the Old Edwards Inn and Spa, we were greeted warmly by the staff, who offered us champagne, water, or soft drinks. Then we were given a brief tour of the incredible facilities of this quaint, beautifully landscaped resort at the heart of downtown Highlands, North Carolina.

Old Edwards Inn

What a beautiful place! It features spacious guest rooms with large, four-post canopy beds and claw-foot tubs. The cottages have rustic designs—complete with multiple rooms and private porches—and they are ideal for families.

The inn and lodge feature the welcoming influences of old-European architecture, exposed stone and cozy fireplaces, plus Victorian-era furnishings and art. These decorative effects create warmth and character to this beautiful inn nestled in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina.

Linda and I loved being surrounded by period antiques, the European bedding, and fine Italian linens. Our bathroom provided comfort and elegance, with plush robes and slippers, rainfall showers, heated-tile floors, and all the finest amenities.
Our suite, located in the main lodge, offered a private patio terrace with beautiful mountain flora. The suite led us through a path to the outdoor heated mineral pool, whirlpool, and poolside bar and cabana. Linda, who is a landscape designer, was able to name every plant and flower we encountered. Amazing, we both agreed: “This is like a taste of heaven, exactly what we needed, and so good for the soul.”

Most of our time was spent indulging in the spa with its lovely boutique and amenities. We loved the pampering and the professional, warm, and super classy staff, especially Kyra and Kimberly. We both enjoyed massages, relaxing in the whirlpool, sauna, and steam room. I loved the showers with 12 heads (a new experience for me). Lunch in the spa dining room was pleasing to the eyes, as well as delicious and nutritious. We also enjoyed the replenishing antioxidant water and quiet time in the meditation room by the trickling water fall.

Without even having to leave the resort, we were able to listen to live music in the Hummingbird Lounge, enjoy lunch at Alfresco’s Wine Garden, and indulge in premium cocktails with delicious, fresh, healthy cuisine at Madison’s. The food was prepared with high-quality fresh ingredients, and we discovered that many of the fruits and vegetables were grown right there in the Old Edwards Organic Garden.

We were impressed, and so were our taste buds! And all this was delivered in Old-Europe style, service, and ambiance.

On our last day, we met a couple whose daughter was having her wedding at the resort. They told us about The Farm—a lushly landscaped Old Edwards property located one mile from downtown Highlands. It features The Barn and organic garden, the Farmhouse with luxury lodging, a Bridal Pavilion, a Bridal Bridge over a scenic pond, and a spectacular glass and stone barn pavilion. Wow! It almost makes a girl want to get married all over again!

Highlands is brimming with unique shops, galleries, live art venues, and restaurants. We spent a few hours on our way out of town browsing the shops. So much to do, so little time! On our next visit we plan to take a few side trips to the waterfalls in the area.
We had left the lowlands of hot and humid Charlotte to bask for a few days of mountain bliss. This truly was a girlfriends’ perfect getaway. We are definitely going back
